One of the fun parts of knitting is trying to use different ways to knit. Of course, needles are the true-blue way, but one could also use chopsticks, pencils, fingers, arms… just about any two same, strong, slender and smooth objects would do. Bring in finger knitting.
For today’s Saturday stitch, I would like to show you finger knitting with a very loopy yarn, aptly called Loops Pastel by @loopsandthread. The loops are just about right to knit with adult fingers, but its perfect to teach a child as well on the structure of a knit.
As you swipe through the self-explanatory photos, you will see how to begin. Stretch the first loop, and you will find a white thread holding the loop together. Snip that thread and you have a fairly long enough yarn to start with. Of course, since the loops are already made, you don’t need to cast on, but can start straightaway. Lay the loops flat on a working surface and you are good to go. Check out the video in to see how to proceed.
You probably can see how quickly things are going to get knitted up with just fingers.
Now why, would one choose to finger knit? I mean, apart from the learning and teaching part. One major advantage is that you can take your knits to a place where needles would be contraband – I am thinking aeroplanes specifically. Got a long flight, and some time to kill, with the kids doing their puzzles and chatting with strangers? Finger knit away without any danger of needles poking someone or worse, being confiscated 🙂
That’s it from me for this week! Ciao till next Saturday 🙂
