Crochet Granny Square Handbag

For me, today, a granny square is a true example of the 3Rs – reuse, reduce and recycle. Old folks would simply recycle their old woolen garments unravelling the yarn, crocheting these gorgeous squares from the residual scrap yarns and reusing them, and reduce buying new garments or decor. Today this not-so-humble square has come such a long way, and I have used the same technique to make this fun and quirky handbag.

• It is pink, bold, bright and colourful, and designed to work with a variety of outfits. Torun designed the squares in such a way that when the diamond overlay pattern is joined, it forms circles.
• The handbag is lined with cotton fabric, handstitched for a better fit. This lining provides support to the handbag and prevents sagging, while keeping items inside safe from popping out of the crocheted squares.
• Using a small lesson learnt in architecture college – how to make the inside become the outside – I have used the same lining to extend from inside the handbag and encase the two wooden rods outside, thus forming a strong and stable handle for the handbag.
• The handbag can be closed by tying the crochet cord around the This Knitting Bee button.
